Membership

It's very easy to become a member of Hull and East Riding Friends of the Earth, and volunteer your time and skills for the benefit of the planet.

You will become part of a vast, international network of grassroots activists covering 74 countries – from Norway to Australia, from South Korea to Colombia. This network encompasses around 5,000 local activist groups spanning every continent, each of which are local solutions to the global climate crisis.

By taking a stand on issues local to Hull and East Riding and supporting national campaigns and communities around the world, our local members contribute towards taking the urgent action we need.

We ask for a very modest annual fee to keep membership affordable for everyone, at only £10 waged or £5 unwaged made payable once a year.

Benefits

Perhaps you care about the planet and don't like the way things are going - but are new to environmental campaigning. Or maybe you're already a fully-fledged 'eco-warrior' who has already made big lifestyle changes in the name of sustainability.

No matter where you're coming from, there are many benefits to becoming a member of Hull and East Riding Friends of the Earth. Whether it's your first step towards a green future, or your millionth, joining will help us collectively fight for a greener, cleaner future.

And not only are you  on the ongoing nature and climate crises, you are joining a passionate and caring community of other people just like you.

Our Members Report:

Become a Member

It's as easy as filling in a form and sending it to our Treasurer and Membership Secretary Rohan. His details can be found at the bottom of the form.

You can find a membership form:

We will then add you to our mailing lists and keep you up-to-date with what's going on and how you can get involved. We encourage you to come along to our monthly meetings, as that's often the best way to learn about everything and get stuck in with our friendly community.  Membership also gives you the option to join our friendly WhatsAPP group too.

Annual membership fee is only £10 waged and £5 unwaged, made payable once a year (you pay the first with your membership application).

This includes access to the electronic version of the quarterly ECO magazine, which will be emailed direct to your inbox. Any member requesting delivery of ECO as a printed and/or posted copy will be required to pay a £10 per annum supplement to cover the cost of printing and postage.

Meet Mary!

Although all our volunteers welcome new members with open arms, Mary is the person who is there to specifically help newbies land on their feet.

We appreciate that joining a new group can be overwhelming at first. All these new faces, all these new campaigns you might know nothing about, and you're not sure where to put yourself or where you can help.

So Mary will be there to tell you who is who, explain campaigns and help you build confidence as a new member of HERFoE. And don't worry, there's no such thing as a silly question!

Mary is currently putting together a Welcome Pack for newbies... watch this space!

Frequently Asked Questions

What am I expected to do as a member?

As much or as little as you want!

Members are free to choose their level of input. Some members like to get stuck in with everything, others only get involved online or with the big events like the Green Fair, whereas others choose to support action through membership fees.

We also understand many people just don't have the resources, time, capacity or ability to give as much as they'd ideally like to, so members are invited to support as much as they can within their means.

We are a strengths-based community; we encourage members to lean into their interests and lend their existing skills and knowledge to campaigning where they can.

You don't have to get involved with every campaign or action, nor will you be asked to do something you don't feel comfortable with.

Do I need to be a vegan to be a member?

We get this one a lot!

NO you don't have to be vegan or vegetarian to be a member. Moving towards a sustainable future is a transition and old habits die hard. We have some members who are vegan, but plenty who aren't - so there's no judgement here if you're not either.

Can I take out an organisational membership for my local green group/company?

We don't currently offer membership specifically for organisations. But we do highly encourage those leading and involved with these organsiations to take out an individual membership so they can access the mutual-aid support network that HERFoE already serves as for a number of local green groups. We're stronger together, after all!

How are my membership fees spent?

Membership fees (and other donations) are paid into our HERFoE bank account and pay for things that help us campaign like;

Can I give a donation as well as membership?

Of course!

There is an option at the bottom of the membership form to add on an extra donation, or you can make a direct donation, payable either by bank transfer or cheque (bring along to a meeting or event!). Please write DONATION as the payment reference and make payable to:
